Food Waste Action Week 2023

March 6, 2023

Food Waste Action Week is back for 2023, and this year’s theme is Win, Don’t Bin!

The week takes place every year to encourage everyone to save time and money by making the food they already have go further. Did you know, the average family of four spends £70 a month on food they end up throwing away? So cutting back on this waste could make a big difference!

Surrey Environment Partnership has put together some helpful hints for how you can win, don’t bin and help fight the 4.5 million tonnes of edible food that is thrown away by UK households each year:

  • Learn how to keep your food fresher for longer by storing it correctly, and putting leftovers in the fridge or freezer to have another day
  • Perfect your portion sizes and don’t take more food than you can eat
  • Use up your leftover ingredients by trying out tasty new recipes

Reducing food waste is also good for the environment as rotting food sent to landfill releases lots of harmful greenhouse gases. If you have leftovers and scraps you really can’t use up, be sure to put them in your food bin to be turned into electricity!

Visit the Food Waste Action Week website and YouTube channel to watch their campaign video and see their top tips for saving your leftover food from heading to the bin.
