A chilly autumn morning in October 2021 found Woking Borough Council’s Green Infrastructure team let loose in the wilds of The Hermitage School’s outdoor classroom, St John’s, all in the name of conservation volunteering and having some fun!

The opportunity to lend the school a hand came via our Volunteer Woking colleagues, who regularly hear of local organisations and groups looking for volunteers. Thanks too to the Council’s environmental partner, Serco, for lending us tools.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable day, in part taming the outdoor learning area including its pond, pathways, and an area destined in the future to be a sensory garden. We also dug over an extensive area which the school plans to sow with wildflowers.

As we finished our day, we left the school a gift of two nest boxes to support local birdlife.
We look forward to seeing how these nature sites and their wildlife bloom in the future.
