At our upcoming events
Over the next few months we will be hosting a programme of talks and events based around a series of themes aimed at residents, schools and businesses. We will be covering topics such as what changes we can make in our homes to live greener; what sustainable transport choices there are locally; and the Borough’s rich and diverse biodiversity and how we can explore it further whilst protecting it for the future. The events will also offer you the opportunity to feedback your ideas for what more the Council could be doing.

Transport accounts for 30% of Woking Borough’s carbon footprint (source BESI local authority carbon statistics 2019). Whether you live here, work here or are a visitor, we want getting around in Woking to be easy while also contributing to and maintaining a cleaner, greener Borough. We hope that walking, cycling and public transport will be the first choice for short trips. Not only does this benefit local air quality and carbon emissions, but there are clear health and well-being advantages of “active travel”. This talk explores how we can make positive changes to the sustainability of the Borough by adopting greener modes of transport.

Our urban areas are central to our social and economic vitality. But our towns and village centres are affected by climate change too. There is much we can do in these areas to adapt to the inevitable effects of climate change such as more intense rainfall and flooding events to heatwaves and droughts. Join us for a talk that explores how we can adapt our homes, buildings, infrastructure and services to better equip our communities for now and the future. We will be covering topics such as sustainable development, the benefits of greening the urban area with trees and green walls; and the role of rainwater gardens in the urban area to slow surface water run-off and help prevent flooding.

This theme looks at how making changes to our everyday activities at home can contribute to a sustainable Borough. Energy and water use; the amount of waste we produce; how we shop; and our health and well-being all have an impact. By making small changes, we can all help contribute to a more sustainable, healthier and more economical lifestyle for families and individuals and a greener future for Woking.

In Woking Borough we are lucky to have a diverse range of countryside, town and village environments. Enabling access to our natural habitats and wildlife while enjoying the benefits this brings to our own health and well-being is important. However, we must balance this with a need to ensure we protect our local biodiversity for its own sake and so that future generations can enjoy it too.
Join us for a talk exploring the countryside on our doorstep and how local organisations are working together to protect our local habitats and species.
